Thomas Stow was a legend in Cal tennis history, partnering with the great Bud Chandler to win the 1926 NCAA doubles championship before graduating from Cal in 1927. He returned as head coach from 1932-46, the longest tenure at the University at the time. During his time at the helm of the Golden Bears, Stow compiled a 73-45-1 (.618) coaching record, leading Cal to Pacific Coast Conference championships in 1933 (tying with Stanford), 1937 and 1939. He coached two of his doubles teams – Paul Newton and Richard Bennett (1935 and 1937) and Doug Imhoff and Robert Peacock (1939) – to NCAA championships.
Stow Plaza – the main entrance and patio area at the Hellman Tennis Complex – was constructed during the fall of 1994 and formally dedicated upon its completion in 1995 to honor the erstwhile Golden Bear.
