One of the finest quarter-milers in the world during his collegiate career at Cal … won the Pacific Coast Conference and NCAA championships in the 440-yard dash in his first season at Cal in 1936, breaking the world record with a 46.1 clocking in the NCAA heats … went on to win the 1936 Olympic 400-meter gold medal in Berlin (46.5) … retired the next season after a serious leg injury … served as a U.S. Air Force pilot in World War II.
