A standout gymnast at Cal, Freudenstein won the NCAA title in floor exercise in 1968, while placing 5th in the parallel bars that year … had previously placed in multiple events at the 1967 NCAA championships, taking 2nd in the floor exercise, 5th in the long horse and 10th in the high bar, and had placed 3rd in the vault at the 1966 championship … earned a third-place finish at the 1968 Olympic Trials and went on to become captain of the ’68 Olympic Team that competed in Mexico City … also was runner-up in the floor exercise for the U.S. at the 1967 World University Games in Tokyo … at the conclusion of his career as a participant, Freudenstein earned a Ph.D. in physics at the University of Colorado, where he also served as head gymnastics coach for several years … also served as chairman of the physics department at Metropolitan State University in Denver, Colo.,
