Earned first-team All-America honors two consecutive seasons as a tackle in 1948 and '49 … also was first team All-Coast those seasons … served as captain of the Cal team in 1949 that posted a 10-1 record, the only blemish coming in a 17-14 loss to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl … a courageous athlete who overcame a knee injury in '48 and had one of his ribs removed prior to the '49 season because of a tumor.
