Dowell Posts 12 Points, 10 Rebounds, 8 Assists
BERKELEY – Behind a near triple-double from Shannon Dowell, the California women's basketball team went up by double figures in the first quarter and never looked back in a dominating 100-46 win over Long Beach State in Haas Pavilion on Thursday evening. The Golden Bears (2-0) defense held The Beach (0-1) in check all evening limiting them to two single-point quarters including just five in the third.
Dowell ended up with 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists (tied career high). Had she reached a triple-double, she would have been fourth Bear in program history to do so and first since Gabby Green had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists in a win over CSUN on Dec. 30, 2015. It marked the 10th double-double of her career.
The 100-point total was the most scored by Cal since putting up 102 in a 42-point win over McNeese State on Dec. 11, 2021. Including Dowell, five Bears scored in double figures: Lulu Twidale (15), Taylor Barnes (14), Jovana Jevtovic (14) and Gisella Maul (12). Cal totaled 27 assists and for the second-straight game had single-digit turnovers (8).
The 54-point margin of victory marked Cal's largest since the Golden Bears defeated Cal State Northridge 106-44 on Dec. 30, 2015 and was the fourth largest since the 2002-03 season.
Maul had five of the Bears' first eight points to open the game which included a play where Twidale made a wraparound pass along the baseline to Barnes in the opposite corner who then found Maul at the top of the key for a triple. The Bears held The Beach to a stretch of 1-of-9 from the floor to take a 13-7 lead with just under three minutes to go. Long Beach State had just one field goal in the last 4:30 and Cal took a 21-9 lead into the second quarter.
Cal started the second quarter on a 6-0 run all scored by Naya Ojukwu. The Beach didn't score a field goal until just over six minutes left in the quarter. The Bears used a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 42-16 when Barnes hit a 3-pointer off an assist from Shannon Dowell – her sixth of the night to that point.
The Bears put any comeback attempt to bed as Twidale scored or assisted on Cal's first eight points of the third quarter during a 17-2 opening run. After being held to two points in the first half, Twidale contributed 10 points during the run and 13 in the quarter. Cal outscored Long Beach State 30-5 in the quarter and the rout was on as the Bears were up by 49 points.
12 of the 13 Bears who took the floor ended up in the scoring column.
"I'll just start just by saying, I'm really proud of our team and just our attention to detail today, our intensity level on the defensive end," Cal head coach Charmin Smith said. "We've been challenging them to be who we're supposed to be. I thought this was a good day."
