Was the first big-time recruit to come to Cal under Nort Thornton … from 1976-79 led the Golden Bears on a climb up the NCAA ladder from 11th to eighth to third to the 1979 NCAA title … won the NCAA title in the 200 backstroke in '79 with a then-school record 1:46.21 … earned All-America honors in 17 different events during his college career … first broke onto the international scene the fall of his freshman year when he won the 1975 Pan Am gold medal in the 100 back … won the silver medal in both the 100 and 200 back at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal
