A consensus All-America linebacker after a sterling senior year in 1983 … set a school record with 26.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage that season, including 13 sacks … ended his career with 337 tackles, including 188 unassisted stops … the only Cal player in the decade of the 1980's to earn first-team Associated Press honors, coupling that with first-team honors from Kodak (coaches association), the Football Writers, Sporting News and Football News … earned Pac-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors and won the Pop Warner Award for top senior on the West Coast … also earned team MVP honors … won the season opener at Texas A&M when he recorded a safety in the end zone with 57 seconds left to provide Cal a 19-17 victory … also led Cal in tackles as a sophomore  (99) and junior (99) … ended his career with 47.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, a school record which still ranks high all-time … was Cal's Co-MVP as a sophomore in 1981 … best game that season was when he recorded 17 tackles against Georgia and Herschel Walker … drafted in the second round (44th pick) by the Chicago Bears … played for nine years for the Bears, playing on the Super Bowl title team in 1985, plus six other years in which the Bears reached the playoffs (three of those to NFC championship game) … was team's Unsung Hero award winner in 1986 and the Player with Most Courage award in 1989 … Chicago Bears Man of the Year for community service in 1990 …  Was a very active member of the Bear Backers …  Was a member of Illinois State Governor's Health and Physical Fitness Council …  Also served as defensive coordinator with the Bears, including their 2007 Super Bowl trip, and then became an assistant with the San Diego Chargers.
