Carpenter Phinney has devoted her life to athletics … at the age of fourteen she was selected to the 1972 United States Olympic Speed Skating team … her athletic career at Cal centered around rowing and she was a member of Cal’s varsity team for two seasons … in 1979, her varsity team finished second nationally, and in 1980, she reached the top of the collegiate rowing world with a national championship in the varsity four … after graduating from Cal in 1981, she became one of the dominant women in all of her sports … her accomplishments in cycling were many and carried … 1984 Olympic Gold medal in the 79.2 km, in a road race in Los Angeles … .1983 world champion in the 3000m pursuit … 12-time United States national champion … four-time World Champion medalist … .three-time Coors Classic Champion.
