Paul Newton and Richard Bennett captured the NCAA doubles championships in 1935 and 1937, together becoming one of the best tandems Cal has ever produced. Newton was the team captain of the tennis team both years he competed before finishing his degree and later becoming a doctor, who practiced as a physician in the Bay Area for many years. He remained actively involved in Cal tennis and was a donor to the program.
