Sherman White had played little football before coming to Berkeley as a sophomore in 1969. In his second year with the team (1970), he sacked opponent quarterbacks 18 times, including Heisman Trophy winner Jim Plunkett twice in the Big Game. He also knocked down five passes, made 44 unassisted tackles and aided in 31 others. He was named first team All-Coast and All-Pac-8. As a team captain in 1971, he earned All-American honors, as well as All-Pac-8 recognition for the second straight year, when he registered 75 tackles and three pass breakups. White was the second pick overall in the 1972 NFL Draft by Cincinnati and played four seasons for the Bengals (1972-75) before playing eight more campaigns with the Buffalo Bills (1976-83) to round out his career.
