Another great Cal half-miler who set a world record in the 880-yard run in 1955 with a time of 1:47.5 . . .was a member of the 1956 U.S. Olympic team and finished sixth in the 800 meters (1:49.30) … also was one of six members of the United States’ 1,600-meter relay team that won the gold medal in the ’56 Olympics … won the Pacific Coast Conference and the IC4A 880 title in 1952, tying for third in the NCAA 880 that year, earning All-America honors … finished fifth in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 800 in 1952 … was the PCC champ in the 880 in 1953 … finished fifth in the NCAA in the 880 in 1954 … also anchored Cal two-mile relay team that broke the world record in 1956 … received Walter Christie Award for Outstanding Track Athlete in '54 … qualified for Pan Am Games by finishing first in the U.S. Pan Am Trials with the fifth-fastest time in American History in spring of '55 … finished second in the 800 meters and first in the 1,600 relay at the Pan Am Games in Mexico City in '55 … after graduation served as president of the Big C Society and was a warden in the Order of the Golden Bear.
