Legendary Hotchkiss Wightman Revolutionized Game

Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman was the first woman player to win the United States National singles, doubles and mixed doubles championships in the same year (1909) and was the first woman to win the three titles in three consecutive years, including 1910 and 1911…she again won the U.S. singles crown in 1919 and took U.S. doubles titles in 1915, ’18 and ’20…between the years 1919 and 1943 she won a combined total of 17 singles, doubles and mixed doubles United States Indoor Championships…in 1923, she inaugurated the Wightman Cup championships between British and American women, donating the trophy, and was a playing member on the teams in 1923, ’24, ’27, ’29 and ’31…in 1924, she won the doubles at Wimbledon - teaming with fellow Cal hall of famer Helen Wills Roark - and captured the Olympic gold medals in doubles (also with Wills Roark) and mixed doubles in Paris…between 1948 and 1954 she won 11 United States Grasscourt Senior Doubles Championship…in 1957 she was elected to the National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame...a teacher of the game as well, Wightman coached several top players including Wills Roark and fellow Cal alumna and hall of famer Helen Hull Jacobs.
