Perhaps the most influential man in the modern era of water polo … coached at Cal from 1963 to '88 with an impressive 519-172-10 mark during his 26-year tenure, including an unprecedented eight NCAA titles … won the NCAA Coach of the Year award four times … served as the U.S. Olympic Coach in 1976, although the Americans just missed qualifying for the Olympics that year … helped nurture a host of great players including Olympians Peter Asch, Barry Weitzenberg, Kevin Robertson, Jon Svendsen and Peter Schnugg … since 1996, the award for the National Collegiate Player of the Year for both men and women is named in his honor.
