Liz Klompaker Scores Pair Of Goals
The California field hockey team (3-0) led wire to wire in a 4-0 shutout win over visiting Columbia (1-1) at Underhill Field on Sunday afternoon. Liz Klompmaker scored a pair of goals for the second consecutive game and 11th of her career. The Golden Bears held the Lions to just two shots for the game.
Klompmaker now has 36 goals for her career which moved her into a tie for fifth place with Ilse Akkermans on Cal's all-time career goals list.
With just over a minute remaining in the first period, Holly Pears lobbed the ball into the circle to find Klompmaker who knocked it in for the score. The Bears ended up taking a 1-0 lead into the second half.
Klompmaker wasted little time for her second goal as she stole the ball on Columbia's 25-yard line and took it all the way for the score just four minutes into the third period.
The Bears were able to tack on two more goals in the last five minutes of the fourth period – both off of penalty corners. With 3:20 left in the fourth period Holly Pears injected the ball to Flore Uges who caught the ball and sent it to Josefina Moyano who redirected it for the score. Less than a minute later, Pears once against injected the ball, this time to Cato Arlman who took the pass at the top of the circle and scored off the stop for her first career goal.
"Columbia is a very good team and they had a really challenging press to get out, so compliments to them in the way they were coached today," Donna Fong Co-Director of Field Hockey Steve Danielson said." "We've been working on our outletting and the style that we outlet, how we move the ball, how quickly we move the ball from player to player and as you can see in today's game, they really used it."
Cal hits the road for a two-game stint against Michigan (Sep. 11) and Michigan State (Sep. 13).
