The No. 16 California field hockey team (9-5, 2-4 ACC) scored two late goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Boston College (6-9, 1-5 ACC) 2-1. The win secured the Golden Bears' second ACC victory of the season. Liz Klompmaker scored the equalizer, while Holly Pears netted the game-winner with 21 seconds left.
Despite Cal earning two penalty corners in the first quarter, the Eagles struck first with just over four minutes remaining. Klara Mueffelmann found Maren Boyle in the circle, who sent a reverse chip into the net to give Boston College an early 1-0 lead.
The second quarter saw limited offensive action, with neither team able to find the back of the cage. The Eagles had a chance to extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty stroke six minutes into the quarter, but Carine Van Wiechen blocked Laila Rosenquest's attempt to keep Boston College's lead at one.
After halftime, the Bears' offensive unit opened up, generating five shots to the Eagles' two. Cal also earned two penalty corners but was unable to capitalize on either opportunity.
In the fourth quarter, the Bears earned three penalty corners. The first came just over three minutes into the period, when Klompmaker ripped a shot that was blocked.
After a back-and-forth battle for the remainder of the quarter, Cal earned its second corner with 2:18 remaining. Agustina Daud took the shot, but it went wide, and the Bears earned another corner. This time, Klompmaker took the direct shot, which appeared to be headed into the cage before a foul by a Boston College defender resulted in a penalty stroke for Cal.
Klompmaker took the stroke, but her attempt was saved by Kramer. Just 10 seconds later, however, Boston College tried to outlet the ball, but Maria Scocco regained possession. Scocco found Klompmaker in the circle, where she fired a reverse chip into the top-right corner to even the score at 1-1.
With the score tied 1-1 and 30 seconds remaining, Mia DiGiulio sent an aerial into the circle that was received by an Eagles defender. The defender mishandled the ball, allowing Pears to immediately gain possession and send a reverse chip into the back of the net. Her goal gave Cal its first lead of the game with just 21.2 seconds remaining.
The Eagles requested a review of the play, but the goal stood, securing the Bears' second ACC win of the season.
Cal outshot the Eagles 13-8 and earned seven penalty corners compared to Boston College's two. Van Wiechen recorded three saves, including a crucial stop on Rosenquest's penalty stroke in the second quarter.
Klompmaker now has 13 goals on the season, leading the Bears in scoring. Pears recorded her third game-winning goal of the season, a career high, and now has eight goals. Scocco's assist marked her second of the season.
"Proud of how the team believed in each other, managed the clock, and executed in the final minutes," Donna Fong Co-Director of Field Hockey Steve Danielson said.
Cal remains on the East Coast this weekend, traveling to Syracuse, New York, to take on No. 14 Syracuse on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
