Cal Faces Boston College, No. 14 Syracuse In Key Conference Matchups
The No. 16 California field hockey team (8-5, 1-4 ACC) heads back east for a weekend of key ACC matchups against Boston College (6-8, 1-4 ACC) and No. 14 Syracuse (7-5, 2-3 ACC). The Golden Bears face the Eagles on Friday in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, at 1 p.m. PT before taking on the Orange on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT. Sunday's matchup against Syracuse will be televised nationally on ACC Network.
Last season, Cal and Boston College met at Underhill Field, where the Bears earned their first win over the Eagles in program history. Cal secured a thrilling 2-1 victory after two overtimes and two shootouts, earning its first ACC win of the season. The Bears trail the Eagles 1-6 in the all-time series.
Sunday marks the ninth meeting between Cal and Syracuse. The Orange leads the all-time series 6-2, but the Bears defeated then-No. 5 Syracuse 1-0 last season, tying the highest-ranked win in program history. Liz Klompmaker scored the game's lone goal to lead Cal to the historic victory.
Cal will conclude its regular season next week across the Bay against longtime rival Stanford. The Bears will face the Cardinal on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. PT at Varsity Field Hockey Stadium.
Last Time Out
The Bears defeated in-state rival UC Davis 7-1 last Sunday afternoon, recording their highest-scoring game of the season. After the Aggies opened the scoring, Cal responded with seven unanswered goals to secure its final nonconference victory of the season.
Senior Holly Pears scored four goals while junior Liz Klompmaker recorded a hat trick to lead the Golden Bears offensively. Pears' four-goal performance marked a career high, surpassing her previous single-game best of two goals against VCU on Oct. 2. The outing also brought her season total to seven goals, a career high. Klompmaker now has 12 goals this season, four shy of her career-high 16 set last year. Sunday's performance marked her first hat trick of the season and third multigoal game.
Cal outshot UC Davis 27-4, putting 18 shots on goal, and held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Following the weekend, Cal remained in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll for the sixth consecutive week. The Bears moved to No. 16 in Tuesday's rankings and ranked No. 18 in the NCAA Division I RPI as of Oct. 18.
