The No. 14 California field hockey team (7-5, 1-4 ACC) fell to No. 3 Duke (10-3, 5-1 ACC) in a sudden-victory shootout Sunday after a late fourth-quarter rally forced overtime. The Golden Bears scored twice in the final quarter to overcome a 1-0 deficit, with Josefina Moyano and Liz Klompmaker finding the back of the cage. Despite the loss, graduate goalkeeper Carine Van Wiechen delivered a career-high 14 saves, including six in overtime, to keep the Blue Devils at bay and send the game to a shootout.
The first two quarters featured a defensive battle between the teams, with neither side finding the back of the cage before halftime. Cal recorded one shot, while Duke registered three in the first half. The Blue Devils earned the lone penalty corner of the half but were unable to convert.
Duke broke the deadlock late in the third quarter. Alaina McVeigh generated two shots less than a minute apart, regaining possession for the Blue Devils before dribbling left in the circle and sending a low reverse shot past Van Wiechen into the bottom-right corner of the cage. Duke carried a 1-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
Trailing by one, the Bears offense sparked in the final quarter. Six minutes into the fourth, Klompmaker weaved through Duke's defense before sending a hard sweep from the top of the circle toward Moyano at the stroke mark. Moyano redirected the ball with a well-placed tip into the top-right corner of the cage to even the score at 1-1.
Cal carried that momentum, earning a penalty corner just three minutes later. Emma Becker inserted the ball to Klompmaker at the top of the circle, where the junior unleashed a drag flick over a diving Duke goalkeeper to find the top-left corner of the cage. Klompmaker's ninth goal of the season gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with five minutes remaining.
Following Klompmaker's go-ahead goal, Duke pulled its goalkeeper for an extra attacker. Cal's defense held firm until just over two minutes remained, when the Blue Devils earned back-to-back penalty corners. On the second attempt, Juliette Schulten sent a shot toward the cage, but Flore Uges blocked it from crossing the goal line. Duke challenged the play for a stroke, and the challenge was successful. Julia Boehringer converted the penalty stroke into the top-left corner to tie the game at 2-2.
With less than a minute remaining, Duke goalkeeper Chepow returned to the cage, but neither team found a winner before time expired, sending the game to a shootout.
In the opening round, Holly Pears and Klompmaker converted for Cal, while McVeigh and Boehringer scored for Duke to leave the shootout tied at 2-2.
The teams then advanced to a second round of sudden-victory attempts. McVeigh converted again to give Duke the advantage. Pears attempted a direct sweep on Cal's response, but Chepow made the save to secure the victory for the Blue Devils.
"Today was a tough loss," said Donna Fong Co-Director of Field Hockey Steve Danielson. "The team took advantage of its opportunities, and we feel we are in a good spot at this point in the season."
The Bears will hit the road for their final nonconference matchup of the season, facing in-state foe UC Davis on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. PT.
