The No. 16 California field hockey team (8-6, 2-5 ACC) fell to No. 14 Syracuse (9-5, 4-3 ACC) in a shootout Sunday after battling to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime. Junior Liz Klompmaker scored the Golden Bears' lone goal late in the third quarter to even the score, while Carine Van Wiechen anchored the defense with seven saves.
The opening quarter was quiet offensively for both teams, combining for just one penalty corner. Syracuse earned the opportunity and sent a direct shot toward the cage, but Van Wiechen denied it with a kick save. The Cal defensive unit held firm for the remainder of the quarter, allowing just one additional shot, which Van Wiechen also stopped.
The Orange came out aggressively in the second quarter, recording two shots and earning two penalty corners in the opening two minutes. On the second attempt, Ava Brewer sent a direct shot that Van Wiechen saved. However, the ball remained in front of the goalkeeper, and players from both teams battled for possession. Syracuse's Aubrey Turner poked the ball through a gap beneath Van Wiechen's arm and into the cage, giving the Orange a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse continued to pressure the Cal defense, adding four more shots in the quarter. The Bears prevented any further scoring and denied two additional penalty corner attempts. Van Wiechen recorded two more saves to keep the deficit at one heading into halftime.
Cal generated several attacking opportunities to open the third quarter, with Josefina Moyano and Adya Kadam each recording a shot. The Bears continued to search for an equalizer, which finally came in the closing seconds of the period.
With 29 seconds remaining, Cal earned its first penalty corner after a foul by a Syracuse defender was upgraded to a penalty corner. Holly Pears inserted the ball to Cato Arlman, who stopped it for Klompmaker. The junior forward fired a direct shot into the bottom-left corner of the cage to tie the game at 1-1. The tying goal was Klompmaker's 14th of the season, with Pears and Arlman credited with assists.
Both teams pushed for a go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter, but neither could break through. Cal earned its lone penalty corner of the period with two minutes remaining. Flore Uges sent a drag flick into the circle that was blocked by a Syracuse defender. The ball deflected off the defender's stick to Agustina Daud, who one-timed a shot toward the corner of the cage, but Tane King made the save. Neither team scored in the final minute, sending the game to overtime.
The Bears offense carried momentum into the overtime period, outshooting Syracuse 5-1. Cal's defense limited the Orange to one shot off target and one unsuccessful penalty corner. With less than two minutes remaining, Scocco fired the ball into the circle, finding Klompmaker, whose shot was saved by King. The rebound fell to Pears, but her one-timed sweep was blocked by a defender. Neither team found the cage in the final minute, forcing a shootout.
Syracuse converted three of its five attempts, from Taylor Bigbie, Hattie Madden and Turner. Moyano and Scocco converted for Cal, but Klompmaker, Pears and Arlman came up just short on their attempts. The Orange won the shootout 3-2 to secure the 2-1 victory.
"We came alive in the second half with possession and quality shots on goal," said Donna Fong Co-Director of Field Hockey Steve Danielson. "In overtime we continued to manage our game well and had clear opportunities to see it out. The team played hard this weekend and now the focus shifts to Thursday."
The Bears return to action Thursday for its regular-season finale against longtime rival and ACC opponent Stanford. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT on Oct. 29 at the Varsity Field Hockey Stadium.
