The No. 15 California field hockey team (8-5,1-4 ACC) defeated UC Davis (3-10) 7-1 on Sunday afternoon, scoring seven unanswered goals after the Aggies struck first. Junior Liz Klompmaker recorded a hat trick, while senior Holly Pears scored four goals, including a penalty stroke, to lead the Golden Bears offensively.
The teams traded possession early in the first quarter, with Davis earning three penalty corners in the opening nine minutes. On the third attempt, Ella Franken sent a direct reverse shot into the cage to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. It proved to be their only goal of the afternoon.
Cal responded just over two minutes into the second quarter. Klompmaker dribbled through the Aggies' defensive circle and fired a reverse shot into the cage to even the score at 1-1. With four minutes remaining in the half, Pears carried the ball upfield, maneuvered past a Davis defender and drove a shot past goalkeeper Addy Collingwood to give the Bears a 2-1 advantage at halftime.
The Bears broke the game open after the break, scoring five goals in the second half while holding Davis to just one shot and no goals.
Three minutes into the third quarter, Agustina Daud drove along the right baseline and passed to Klompmaker in front of the cage, where the junior tapped the ball into the corner to extend Cal's lead to 3-1. Less than two minutes later, Pears regained possession while pressuring the Aggies' outlet and swept the ball into the right corner of the cage for her second goal of the game.
Pears completed her hat trick six minutes later on a penalty stroke. During a penalty corner, Adya Kadam's shot was headed toward the cage when a Davis defender blocked it with her body. Pears converted the stroke, placing the ball in the bottom-right corner to put Cal ahead 5-1 entering the fourth quarter.
Cal continued to pressure the Aggies, earning three penalty corners in the opening four minutes of the final period. On the third attempt, Emma Becker inserted to Daud, who set up Klompmaker for a drag flick over Collingwood's shoulder. The goal completed Klompmaker's hat trick, with Daud recording her second assist of the afternoon and Becker also earning an assist.
With just over two minutes remaining, the Bears added their seventh goal. Jaiya Labana drove down the right side and sent a low, lifted pass to Pears in front of the cage. After Collingwood blocked her initial attempt, Pears collected the rebound and finished to cap Cal's 7-1 victory.
The Bears outshot the Aggies 27-4, putting 18 shots on goal, and held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Klompmaker now has 12 goals this season, four shy of her career-high 16 set last year. Sunday marked her first hat trick of the season and third multi-goal performance. Pears' four-goal performance marked the highest-scoring game of her career, surpassing her previous single-game high of two goals against VCU on Oct. 2. This also brought her season total to seven goals, a career high.
"This week in training, we focused on playing our style of game, emphasizing our connection and communication," Donna Fong Co-Director of Field Hockey Steve Danielson said. "Today, we had another breakthrough in the process, and we are very proud of how the team is progressing."
The Bears head east next weekend for two ACC matchups. Cal opens the trip against Boston College on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. PT before facing No. 13 Syracuse on Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. PT.
