The No. 17 California field hockey team (9-7, 2-6 ACC) fell 2-1 in a tightly contested battle with Stanford (10-7, 2-6 ACC) Thursday evening. Liz Klompmaker scored the Golden Bears' lone goal, marking her 15th of the season and increasing her career total to 46 goals.
The Cardinal struck early in the first quarter, scoring on a breakaway just over two minutes into the game. Gemma Townsend netted the unassisted goal. The Bears' offense remained quiet, recording just one shot in the quarter. Cal's defensive unit held strong for the rest of the period, allowing no additional shots or penalty corners.
The second quarter was a battle for possession, with neither team registering a shot during the first 10 minutes. With 5:08 remaining, the Cardinal earned the first penalty corner of the game. Natalie Hoppe received the insert and sent the ball to Star Horlock, who was positioned to the left of the cage and slipped her shot just inside the post to extend Stanford's lead to 2-0.
Coming out of halftime trailing 2-0, Cal's offense came alive in the third quarter. The Bears quickly earned a penalty corner just over two minutes into the period. Holly Pears inserted the ball to Flore Uges, whose initial shot was saved by Anya Jackson. The rebound deflected off Jackson's pads and set up Klompmaker, who one-timed a shot into the corner of the cage to put the Bears on the board.
Cal continued to apply offensive pressure in the third quarter, outshooting the Cardinal 7-2 and earning seven penalty corners to Stanford's one. However, the Bears were unable to convert on their opportunities and entered the fourth quarter trailing 2-1.
Despite fighting until the final whistle, Cal was unable to even the score in the fourth quarter, falling 2-1. The Bears finished the night with 10 shots, including seven on goal, while limiting Stanford to five shots and two penalty corners.
The Bears now turn their attention to next week, with hopes of clinching a spot in the ACC Championship. Following Thursday's contest, Cal sits in ninth place in the conference standings with a 2-6 ACC record. The Bears' postseason fate will be determined Friday when Boston College takes on Syracuse at 1 p.m. PT. A Syracuse victory would secure Cal a spot in the ACC Championship, while a Boston College win would eliminate the Bears from postseason contention. Visit the schedule page for updates.
