Bears Stun No. 8 Michigan on the Road

The California field hockey team (4-0) stunned No. 8 Michigan (3-2) with a 1-0 victory at Phyllis Ocker Field on Friday evening, remaining undefeated on the season. Freshman Flore Uges scored the game-winning goal in the third quarter for her first collegiate goal. This also marks the Golden Bears' first road win against a top-20 opponent since 2015, when they defeated No. 6 Stanford, 2-1, in overtime.
The first half was a relentless back-and-forth battle between the Bears and Wolverines, with both teams playing to a scoreless draw through two quarters before Cal broke through in the third.
With 5:39 remaining in the third quarter, the Bears earned a penalty corner, and Uges' initial shot was deflected, setting up another corner. On the second attempt, Uges fired again, this time finding the back of the net to give Cal a 1-0 lead. Mia DiGiulio and Hannah Ward recorded the assists on the goal.
Cal's defense remained dominant, holding Michigan without a shot in the third quarter and keeping the Wolverines off the scoreboard to preserve the shutout. Michigan pulled its goalkeeper in the final minutes in an effort to create an extra-player advantage, but the Bears' defense held firm to secure the win.
The Bears finished with eight shots, including four on goal, while Michigan recorded 10 shots, with four on goal. Cal also earned three penalty corners compared to one for the Wolverines.
"A solid defensive effort across the board," Donna Fong Co-Director of Field Hockey Steve Danielson said. "We moved the ball well and capitalized on our opportunities in the attack. The team stayed connected throughout the game, and that is something we have been working on in practice."
Cal remains on the road this weekend, facing another Big Ten matchup at Michigan State on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
