The No. 20 California field hockey team (6-3, 0-2 ACC) shut out VCU, 4-0 (5-5, 2-0 A-10), on Friday afternoon in Richmond, Virginia, to extend its undefeated road record to 3-0. Holly Pears scored twice, while the Golden Bears' defense limited the Rams to just two shots throughout the game.
VCU started the first quarter with momentum, earning a penalty corner two minutes into the game. The Rams' shot was denied by Carine Van Wiechen. Cal's offense then gained momentum and got on the board just over 10 minutes into the quarter.
Cato Arlman sent a crossing ball into the circle from the right side and found Josefina Moyano, who directed the ball into the back of the net with 4:46 left on the clock. Two minutes later, VCU earned another corner, but the shot was again saved by Van Wiechen to keep the Rams scoreless.
The Bears remained ahead 1-0 late into the second quarter. Mia DiGuilio found Hannah Ward on a defensive outlet, who then sent the ball to Holly Pears just above the 50-yard line. Pears dribbled past VCU defenders down the field and ripped a shot into the cage to extend Cal's lead to 2-0 with 1:47 left in the first half.
Similar to the second quarter, the game remained scoreless for the first 11 minutes of the third quarter. Flore Uges then sent an aerial from the back corner of the field through multiple lines of defense to find Pears. Almost identical to her previous goal, Pears brought the ball up the left side of the field before hitting a reverse shot into the bottom-left corner just between the post and the goalkeeper. The senior's second goal put Cal ahead 3-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
Cal earned a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter, but Uges' shot was saved by Emma Clements. After the corner attempt, it was a quiet quarter, with the Bears dominating possession. With just 1:03 left in the game, Liz Klompmaker weaved through the Rams' defense and ripped a shot into the back of the cage to bring the final score to 4-0.
Klompmaker now has 38 goals for her career and remains in fifth place on Cal's all-time career goals list.
Cal recorded 15 shots and earned six penalty corners.
"Today we started slow but won the momentum once our press got organized," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Steve Danielson said. "The team continues to work hard for each other, and we are most excited to build on that."
Cal continues its road trip Sunday with an ACC matchup against No. 11 Virginia. The Bears and Cavaliers will face off in a top-20 conference matchup at 9 a.m. PT in Charlottesville, Virginia.
