The California field hockey team (7-3, 1-2 ACC) defeated No. 11 Virginia (6-4, 2-3 ACC) 2-1 in overtime Sunday. The Golden Bears dominated offensively, outshooting the Cavaliers 25-6 and earning 17 penalty corners to Virginia's two. Sophomore Josefina Moyano scored the equalizer late in the third quarter before junior Liz Klompmaker netted the overtime game-winner. The victory marked Cal's first ACC win of the season and its first win over Virginia since 2011.
The Bears came out firing in the first quarter, recording four shots and earning two penalty corners in the opening three minutes. Despite Cal's early pressure, Virginia struck first when the Cavaliers earned a penalty corner and Mia Abello found the back of the cage to give Virginia a 1-0 lead with 9:46 remaining in the quarter.
Cal continued to apply pressure in the circle, recording 12 shots and earning six more penalty corners in the quarter while limiting Virginia to two shots.
The second quarter remained scoreless, with the Bears recording two shots and earning two penalty corners but unable to find the equalizer. Carine Van Wiechen came up with a key save for Cal with 40 seconds remaining in the half, denying Abello on a stroke with a split save off her left boot in the bottom-right corner.
Cal came out of halftime with energy, earning a penalty corner just 40 seconds into the third quarter, but was unable to convert. The teams traded possession until 3:23 remained in the period, when Adya Kadam sent a ball into the circle to Moyano at the stroke mark. Moyano collected it and quickly fired a shot into the bottom-left corner to even the score at 1-1.
Virginia earned a penalty corner with less than a minute remaining in the third, but the Cavaliers sent the shot wide, going into the fourth quarter tied.
Both teams looked for the go-ahead goal in the final quarter, but neither could break through. Cal recorded two shots and earned two penalty corners while its defense held Virginia without a shot or penalty corner, sending the game into overtime with the score still tied at 1-1.
The Bears wasted no time in the extra period, earning a penalty corner just 12 seconds into overtime. Cal's corner unit continued to apply pressure, earning four consecutive opportunities. On the fourth, Holly Pears inserted the ball to Klompmaker, who fired a direct shot into the back of the cage to secure the 2-1 victory.
With the win, Klompmaker now has eight goals on the season, while Moyano has five. Kadam's assist marked her first of the season.
"We were proud of the way the team fought hard for each other," Donna Fong Co-Director of Field Hockey Steve Danielson said. "Individual defense has been an area we have been working on and we put it into action today."
The Bears look ahead to their final homestand, welcoming ACC opponents No. 5 Wake Forest and No. 3 Duke. Cal faces the Demon Deacons on Oct. 9 before facing the Blue Devils on Oct. 11. The matchup between Duke and Cal also will be Senior Day.
