Cal Beats Its First Ranked Opponent Since 2017
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After coming so close to defeating ranked opponents on multiple occasions this season, California finally got its win over a team in the top-25 with a 3-1 win over No. 24 Cornell Sunday afternoon.
The last time Cal beat a ranked team was when the Bears beat Stanford on Oct. 15, 2017, a 4-2 win over the 14th-ranked Cardinal. The Golden Bears improved to 6-8 on the season.
Cal is now outscoring its opponents in the last four games, 19-5.
Lindsay Mathison, Maddie Cleat and Megan Rodgers each scored for the Bears, while Katrina Carter, Femke Delissen, Brynn Zorilla and Yvie Lock garnered assists.
"It feels overdue, and this was a good lesson in persevering after having a rough start to the weekend," head coach Shellie Onstead said about beating a ranked opponent. "It was good to bounce back after that first loss this weekend. It's a lot about mental preparation and staying focused. That's really been our focus lately, more than the x's and o's."
Three of the games' four goals were scored in the second quarter with the Bears striking first on Mathison's tally that came off of a corner. Not long after Cornell tied the game at one, Cleat scored a few minutes later to give the Bears a 2-1 lead at halftime.
With just a few minutes left in regulation, Rodgers put the contest out of reach with her goal that was assisted by Zorilla.
Cal out shot Cornell, 23-10, with 18 of those 23 shots on goal.
Cal closes out the regular season with three games in the Northern California, beginning with Friday, Oct. 18, against UC Davis at 6 pm from Underhill Field for the annual Pack The Stands game.
"My thought all year has been that these games have been prep for these next three games," Onstead said. "We're really excited to be at this point in the season now. We can't wait for Friday night."
