NorPac Conference Championship Results

BERKELEY - The California field hockey team (11-7) beat Stanford (7-13) 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field, advancing to play Pacific in tomorrow's NorPac Conference championship game.

Junior forward Valentina Godfrid scored the Golden Bears' first goal 11 minutes into the game off a penalty corner. She was assisted on the goal by senior forward Teela Crosthwaite and senior defender Jenna Long. Godfrid's drag flick gave the Bears an early lead on the Cardinals. Stanford tied the game at the end the first period with a goal by Tammy Shuer off a penalty corner.

Both teams were in a defensive battle for most of the second period. Godfrid was not able to capitalize until with seven minutes left in the game. Scoring off her second drag flick of the day, Godfrid was assisted on the penalty corner again by Crosthwaite and Long.

Defensively for the Bears, goalkeeper Veronica Sykes had three saves. Both teams had five shots apiece, and Cal collected six penalty corners to Stanford's three.

By advancing to tomorrow's NorPac championship game this will mark the seventh straight appearance for the Golden Bears.

Tomorrow's game will also be a rematch of last year's championship game. Last year Pacific ended Cal's three-year streak of NCAA appearances, defeating the Bears 3-2. The tournament was held last season in Davidson, N.C.

The Bears and the Tigers will face off tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. (PST) for an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional on Nov. 12-13.
