No. 17 Bears Fall To No. 12 Louisville 3-2 In Overtime

The California field hockey team (5-2, 0-1 ACC) battled No. 12 Louisville (7-2, 2-0 ACC) into overtime Friday afternoon before falling 3-2 at Underhill Field. Despite the final score, the Golden Bears dominated offensively, outshooting the Cardinals 19-9 with 10 shots on goal.
"We are proud of how the Bears played today," Donna Fong Co-Director of Field Hockey Steve Danielson said.
The Bears took an early lead when senior Jaiya Labana scored in the sixth minute off a penalty corner. Cato Arlman and Emma Becker assisted on the play, giving Cal a 1-0 advantage.
The Cardinals answered less than two minutes into the third quarter when Tyler Everslage scored off a corner rebound, but Cal quickly regained the lead less than a minute later. The Bears earned a penalty corner, and Arlman sent the ball across the circle to Agustina Daud, who found the back of the cage.
Louisville responded again just over two minutes later when Mary Wordelmann scored, sending the game into the fourth quarter tied at 2-2. Neither team could break the deadlock in the fourth quarter, with the Bears outshooting the Cardinals 3-1.
Cal generated opportunities early in overtime, including shots from Liz Klompmaker and Daud. However, with three minutes left, the Cardinals earned a penalty corner, and Aubreigh Uba scored to secure the overtime win.
Graduate student Carine Van Wiechen recorded four saves for the Bears.
"We created plenty of opportunities to win the game. They played connected and we will continue to work on putting it all together," said Danielson.
The Bears continue ACC play Sunday when they host North Carolina at 1 p.m. at Underhill Field.
