Daud Scores First Career Goal

The California field hockey team bounced back from a tough loss against No. 6 Harvard and got a 3-0 win against visiting Ball State at Underhill Field on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Agustina Daud scored her first career goal for the Golden Bears (2-2) and was joined in the scoring column by teammates Liz Klompmaker and Maya Hoepfner. The Golden Bears played tremendous defense allowing the Cardinals (1-4) just one shot all game.

The Bears totaled 23 shots (a season high) and nine different Bears had at least one attempt led by Klompmaker (5) and Daud, Hoepfner and Holly Pears who had four each.

Cal didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard as Klompmaker's goal came just six and a half minutes into the game. Hoepfner quickly extended the Bears' lead with a goal at the 3:42 mark in the first period off a penalty corner. The Cardinals' lone shot attempt didn't come until the 13:39 mark in the second period.

Daud was able to put the game away with her first career goal which came at the 8:18 mark in the third period off an assist from Is Panikowski.

"The emphasis today was to keep our quality and find ways to bring the energy even if they're not really feeling it," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead said. "I give them a B grade on that. Those are things you have got to learn to do as you get better. I think a top team needs to be able to bring their level no matter the opponent. Hats off to Ball State here playing three games. That's really important to the west coast and we like to support those programs. I'm happy with the result. We need to work on cleaning up finishing. We had 23 shots, only three goals, but generating that amount of shots is a good thing. We're pleased overall, but we can always do better."
