Cal Turns Attention To ACC Championship
STANFORD – The California field hockey team (7-9, 1-7 ACC) fell to Stanford (8-8, 2-6 ACC), 3-1, on Thursday night at Varsity Field Hockey Turf in Stanford, Calif.
"Stanford played a great game and their goalie was outstanding," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead said. "Our team played good in the first half but lacked focus coming out of the halftime break. Credit to Stanford for capitalizing."
The game remained scoreless after a tightly contested first half, which saw 14 shot attempts and six corners. The Golden Bears accounted for 10 shots and five corner attempts during that span. Stanford held Cal scoreless after totaling six saves in the first half.
The Cardinal took control of the game in the third quarter after scoring three goals by three different players despite the Bears earning four saves in the frame. Stanford outshot Cal 7-4 in the third quarter, which was a game-high for shot attempts in a quarter. The Cardinal remained in front for the remainder of the game en route to a 3-1 victory. Graduate student Canisha van Duyn scored her third goal of the season in the final minute to cut into the deficit.
Cal will begin its postseason run as it travels to the ACC Championship in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as the No. 8 seed on Tuesday.
