van Duyn Scores Second Goal Of The Season
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 18 California field hockey team (6-7) fell to No. 17 Iowa (7-6), 3-1, on Sunday at Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa.
"Three corners, three goals. You have to give credit to a team that capitalizes on their corners," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead said. "Despite the result, I think we are doing just fine. A lot of people stepped up today. We tried people in positions they haven't trained in, and we had an opportunity to win the game."
Iowa took the early advantage within the first three minutes after capitalizing on a penalty corner. The Golden Bears outshot the Hawkeyes in the frame (3-1) but couldn't find the back on the net.
Graduate student Canisha van Duyn earned her second goal of the season late in the first half to even the score at 1-1. Shortly afterward, Iowa used another penalty corner to reclaim the lead late in the half (2-1).
In a tightly contested second half that saw two penalty corners, six saves and 13 shot attempts, Iowa drained a goal at the 49:30 mark to extend its lead en route to securing a 3-1 victory.
Cal returns to Berkeley to close out their 2024 home slate, beginning Friday in an ACC matchup against Louisville.
