Cal Dominates Stat Sheet But Fails To Score
BERKELEY – The California field hockey team dominated possession and filled up the stat sheet on Friday afternoon against visiting Miami (Ohio), but the Golden Bears could not send a ball to the back of the net and fell to the visiting Redhawks 2-0 at Underhill Field in the 2023 debut.
Cal (0-1) started an all-international lineup for the first time in Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead's career. Nine Bears made their debut; seven in the starting lineup. Cal outshot Miami 11-3, had a 6-3 shots-on-goal advantage and the Bears also owned an 11-0 advantage on penalty corners.
"I am really pleased with the overall performance," Onstead said. "I think we had plenty of chances. We have to clean up the set pieces, which I've said was one of my goals from the first day. That's pretty easy to take care of; we just need a few more reps. I thought their goalie played really well. It was easily a closer game; their goals came on some nice fast breaks. They executed on some 2-vs.-1s. But overall, if you just look at the stats, we look really good. We just got to put it in the net."
Miami (1-0) got a tremendous performance from senior keeper Isabelle Perese (1-0), who finished the day with six saves and earned the clean sheet.
After a scoreless opening period, Miami got on the board in the 18th minute when Mary Kate Barbee corralled a loose ball on the right side of the circle to beat keeper Tina Jolly (0-1). Ten minutes later, the Redhawks made it 2-0 when Reese Wearren and Carlie Servis ended up on a 2-vs.-1 fast break. At the last second, Wearren sent a pass to the right side past a diving Jolly to Servis, who had an open net.
After the intermission, the Bears were in total control. Cal outshot Miami 5-0, all coming in the fourth quarter. They also owned a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners. However, Perese turned the Bears away time and again, finishing with three saves in the fourth quarter alone.
Seven Bears tallied at least one shot. Graduate transfer Bente Baekers led all players with four shots on the day, one coming on goal. Daniella Rhodes had a pair of shots with one on goal. Jolly finished the afternoon with one save and two goals allowed in her first career start.
Cal will return to action on Sunday when they host No. 3 Maryland. Sunday's contest will be streamed live on the Cal Live Stream. Fans can also follow the action live via live stats which can be accessed at Statbroadcast.com.
