Bears Had Chances Late Against Hoosiers

BERKELEY – The Cal women's field hockey team scored twice in the third quarter but could not hang on for the win as visiting Indiana defeated the Bears 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Underhill Field.

Cal (1-3) got goals from Hanna Winn and Sara Stone while also getting tremendous play from a bevy of defenders, however, it wasn't enough as the Hoosiers scored twice in the fourth period and won it on a penalty shot in overtime by Anna Mozeleski to end it.

"Today was a huge effort for four plus periods," said the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead. "It was something we talked about after the last game is how to be more consistent across the whole game. That was our first overtime game of the season and I thought we played really, really well until the end. That's the thing about overtime, you can totally control it and dominate it but everybody always has a chance, that's why it is so exciting. If nothing else, our team learned that we can play with anybody and it is just difficult not to come away with the win. But we got a lot out of this game and I'm super proud of them."

In the opening half, the two sides did not get much going on offensively, going into the intermission scoreless with just a shot taken by each team.

Out of the break, the Bears quickly seized the momentum with Hanna Winn scoring her first collegiate goal in the 34^th minute. Winn picked up a rebound on the right side of the circle and sent it past the left side of the Hoosier's keeper.

The Bears added to their lead less than four minutes later when Sara Stone took a pass from Luzi Persiehl on the near post to score her second goal of the season. The assist by Persiehl was her first as a Golden Bear.

Late in the third Indiana began taking control and finished the period with a 7-5 advantage in shots. IU's Sydney Keld got Indiana on the board on the assist from Yip van Wonderen at the 48^th minute. Six minutes later Indiana got the equalizer when the Hoosiers' Kai Snell raced the length of the field and found the back of the net at the 54^th minute.

Cal's senior keeper Cato Knipping did a tremendous job keeping the game level for the remainder of regulation, recording six saves in the quarter, she finished with a season-high eight saves.

The Bears had one final chance in regulation but could not capitalize on a corner with less than six seconds in regulation. In overtime, the Bears continued to put pressure on Indiana, securing two more corners. However, both times the Hoosier defense turned the Golden Bears away.

At the 69^th minute, Indiana was awarded a penalty shot and Mozeleski capped the comeback for the Hoosiers by sending a shot to the top right corner.

Cal will return to action next Friday when they host North Carolina at Underhill Field. The Bears and Tarheels are slated for a 4:00 p.m. start. Admission is free to all home Cal field hockey games. Friday's contest will also feature live stats and live video.
