Cal Took 13 Shots, Seven On Goal

STANFORD - California generated numerous high-quality scoring chances, recording 13 shots, seven on goal, but the Golden Bears couldn't get any in the cage as No. 16 Stanford shut out Cal, 2-0, Friday afternoon on the Stanford campus in the America East Conference opener.

Cal fell to 1-5, 0-1 on the year.

Natalie Dalton collected six saves, while Megan Connors posted three shots. Maddie Cleat and Katrina Carter each posted two shots on goal, as well.

After a tightly-contested first half, the Cardinal got on the scoreboard first in the third quarter, converting on a penalty corner. Head coach Shellie Onstead said she was pleased with how well Cal did in not allowing Stanford to get many corners, just three in the game. But unfortunately for the Bears, the Cardinal made good on the few chances they had in that department.

The third quarter also featured multiple high-quality scoring opportunities for the Bears. Cal garnered six shots in the third frame, three of which were on goal. One Cal shot required a defensive save by Stanford's Molly Redgrove or the game would have been tied at one.

With less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Stanford added one more goal after a penalty corner for their second goal of the day.

Cal returns to the east coast next week. First up is a matchup against Penn State on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 3:30 pm PT.
