Field Hockey Drops Season Opener to No. 3 Maryland

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3 Maryland (1-0) blanked California (0-1), 8-0, on Saturday at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf on the Stanford campus.
Colleen Barbieri and Angie Klingerman both came off the bench to score a pair of goals to lead the Terrapins over the Bears. Carissa Messimer put Maryland on the board first, scoring an unassisted goal with 29:30 remaining in the first half to give the Terrapins a 1-0 lead. Lucy Morris (18:19) and Klingerman (10:26) added unassisted goals before Barbieri finished out the first half scoring with 3:37 left to go in the half with an assist from Messimer.
Maryland added four more goals in the second half, the first coming on an unassisted score by Dina Rizzo with 31:02 to go in the game. Megan Kelly picked up her first score of the game with an assist from Rachel Hiskins to give Maryland a 6-0 advantage at 23:34 left in the game. Barbieri (17:30) increased the margin to 7-0 before Klingerman finished off the scoring with an assist from Beth Hafer with 2:56 to go.
Starting Terrapin goalkeeper Ashley Hohnstine was credited with a solo shutout in the victory as she recorded five saves. Cal keeper Emily Rowlen stopped 19 Maryland shots.
The Terrapins out shot the Bears, 36-9. Cal hosts Delaware Tue., Aug. 28 at noon at Kleeberger Field.
