Bears’ Second-Half Push Comes Up Short Against Panthers
BERKELEY – California men's soccer dropped its second ACC contest of the season to Pitt, falling 2-1 to the Panthers at Edwards Stadium on Sunday.
The first goal of the game came in the 23rd minute when an own goal deflected off a Golden Bear to put Cal in a 1-0 deficit. The Bears created several offensive chances after the concession but ultimately entered halftime down by one goal.
Not long after the second half began, Cal conceded again in the 48th minute to fall into a two-goal deficit. Callen Lewis responded in the 61st minute, putting the Bears on the board and cutting the Panthers' lead to 2-1. The goal marked Lewis' second of the season, with Kieran Bracken Serra recording the assist.
Lewis' goal sparked an offensive push from the Bears, with Cal taking five more shots before the final whistle, but the Bears ultimately fell to Pitt by a final score of 2-1.
The Bears outshot the Panthers 9-5, with Lewis and Adrian Jacobs leading all players in the match with three shots apiece.
Cal begins a three-week road stretch with a match at Pacific on Friday, Sept. 25. The match is set to air on ESPN+.
