Cal Drops Senior Day Contest, 2-0
BERKELEY – California men's soccer fell in its final home contest of the regular season, dropping a 2-0 decision to the No. 1 SMU Mustangs at Edwards Stadium on Saturday.
Cal came out of the gate with intensity, taking the first few shots of the match. However, the Mustangs struck first, scoring in the 29th minute. The Bears kept the pressure on offensively for the remainder of the first half, outshooting SMU by a 2-to-1 margin. However, Cal was unable to find the back of the net, and the teams headed into the locker room with SMU leading 1-0.
As the second half began, the Bears quickly faced offensive pressure from the Mustangs, who scored again in the 50th minute. That goal proved to be the final one of the match, as Cal ultimately fell 2-0.
At the end of 90 minutes, Cal outshot SMU 14-12, Noe Morales leading the match with four shots. Goalkeeper Thomas Grimes made his second start of the season between the posts, recording four saves for the Bears.
Cal will head to Stanford on Friday, Oct. 30, for its final match of the regular season. The match is set to air on ACCNX.
