Guimaraes’ Brace Leads Cal Past Gaels

By: Cal Athletics

BERKELEY – California men's soccer is back in the win column after a dominant 4-0 shutout against Saint Mary's on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Bears scored a season-high four goals and recorded their sixth shutout of the season against the Gaels.

Cal got on the board first with a 40th-minute penalty kick from Cesar Cordova, and the Bears were rolling from there. Lucca Guimaraes netted his third goal of the season just under two minutes later with a stunning volley to give the Bears a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

The match was back-and-forth to start the second half, but Guimaraes broke the stalemate with his second goal of the match in the 71st minute. The goal marked Guimaraes' first career brace and the first brace of the season for the Bears.

The scoring didn't stop there. Callen Lewis gave the Gaels no reprieve, netting his fifth goal of the season in the 76th minute. Lewis' goal capped the scoring, as Cal went on to secure the 4-0 victory.

In goal, Laszlo Bollyky made his first career start, recording all five of the Bears' saves and earning the win after just under 58 minutes between the posts. Thomas Grimes entered the match in the 58th minute, followed by Spencer Micali in the 83rd, as the Bears closed out the shutout.

The Bears return to action at Edwards Stadium on Sunday, October 18, against ACC foe NC State. The match is set to air on ACCNX.
