Bears Run-Rule Panthers In Series Opener
After allowing just two hits to San Francisco in an 8-0 shutout win on Monday, the Golden Bears (16-16, 2-11) took their momentum into conference with equally impressive play on both sides of the ball to take a lead in an ACC series for the first time this season.
Oliver de la Torre earned the start, and he was all Cal needed to down the Panthers (22-10, 6-7) as he became the first Bear to toss a complete game this season. The junior allowed just three hits, two walks, and one earned run in seven innings of work while striking out five.
After going six-up, six-down through the first two innings the Panthers threatened in the third loading the bases with just one out, but thanks to a diving catch by centerfielder Joshua Hanson were limited to one run on a sac-fly to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bears immediately punched back in the top of the fourth with their biggest inning of the season, and biggest in ACC play scoring 10 runs on nine hits to take a commanding lead. Freshman Jett Kenady tied the game with an RBI single and fellow rookie Lawson Olmstead gave Cal the lead with a towering three-run home run to right center. Carl Schmidt hit a solo shot in the very next at bat and later in the 13-batter frame, Daniel Murillo hit a three-run home run giving him two hits and two runs in the inning.

Jacob French went 2-for-2 in the inning as well with a double and a two-RBI single and ended the game a perfect 3-for-3 with an HBP and two runs scored.
Olmstead struck again in the top of the sixth collecting a bases-loaded, two out single to drive in a pair and give the freshman DH a career-high five RBI on the day and put Cal in position to end the game early.
The Bears will look to claim their first conference series in game two tomorrow back at Charles L. Cost Field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. PT on ACCNX.
