Bears Look To Sweep West Coast 7's Circuit With Third Tournament Title
BERKELEY – California rugby will head south this weekend for its final sevens tournament of the fall. The Golden Bears look to sweep the West Coast Sevens circuit and to capture their third tournament title of the campaign. The WC7's SoCal will be held at the Oceanside Sports Complex on Saturday and Sunday. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. PT each day, with the championship match set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
Cal will compete in Pool A alongside the University of San Diego's second side, San Diego State's top side and Mira Costa. Pool B features top sides from Cal Poly, Claremont and Utah, as well as San Diego State's second side. Pool C includes the second sides from Cal Poly and Claremont, the University of San Diego's top side and Long Beach State. The top team from each pool, along with the fourth-highest-ranked team overall in pool play, will advance to Sunday's semifinals.
The Bears will bring one team featuring nine upperclassmen and six underclassmen as they look to extend their top side's undefeated sevens campaign. Cal's top side has captured titles at both the WC7s Los Angeles and Palo Alto tournaments this fall.
Stalwart senior Max Threlkeld, who earned MVP honors at the Los Angeles stop, will once again captain the Bears in San Diego. He will be joined by senior Nate Comiskey, the MVP of the Palo Alto tournament, and standout juniors Seamus Deely and Oliver Teague.
One notable absence from the traveling roster is talisman Filip Edstrom, who will remain in Berkeley due to a minor injury. Edstrom, who was named MVP of the 2025 National Collegiate Championship as a freshman and played a key role in Cal's 2026 national championship run, will be missed.
At Palo Alto last weekend, Cal's top side shut out Saint Mary's second side, 46-0, and Indiana, 31-0, in pool play before defeating Cal Poly, 24-7, in the semifinals. The Bears then beat Saint Mary's top side, 31-12, in the championship match to claim the tournament title. Cal's second side finished its tournament with a 15-12 victory over Saint Mary's second side after falling to Saint Mary's top side and Cal Poly in pool play.
