Cal I Repeats As West Coast 7s Los Angeles Champion While Cal II Wins The Challenger Division
CARSON – California rugby's two squads turned in good performances at West Coast 7s Los Angeles on Saturday, with the top side winning the championship and the second side claiming the Challenger Division title. Max Threlkeld was named Man of the Tournament with his four-try performance.
The Golden Bears' top side opened pool play with wins over Grand Canyon, 24-14, and Long Beach State I, 36-0, before advancing to the semifinals, where they defeated Indiana, 19-7. Cal then faced Saint Mary's top side in the championship, defeating the Gaels, 22-7, to claim the West Coast 7s Los Angeles title for the second consecutive year.
Threlkeld led Cal I with four tries, while James Curtis added three tries and two conversions. Nate Comiskey registered two tries and two conversions.
The Bears' second side also went undefeated to win the Challenger Division championship. Cal II defeated San Diego, 32-5, and Long Beach State II, 22-0, in pool play before advancing to the Challenger semifinals against Mexico ANUIES. The Bears won, 36-5, to advance to the Challenger championship, where they defeated Saint Mary's second side, 22-7, to claim the title.
Ryan Scully and Oliver Sinclair both led Cal II with four tries, while Reese Reiter and Tomás Tort each contributed three. Reiter and Sinclair also each registered a conversion.
"Maybe as expected for first time out this season, there were lots of lessons on offer," said head coach Jack Clark. "The conditions were difficult with the heat and our boys did well to grind through it."
Cal resumes its sevens season on Oct. 10 with the West Coast 7s Stanford at Steuber Rugby Stadium.
