Bears Announce A Challenging Lineup Of Fixtures
BERKELEY — The California rugby program announced its 2027 spring 15-a-side schedule. This marks the 145th season of Golden Bear rugby, as Cal looks to build on last year's national championship-winning campaign.
Head Coach Jack Clark will lead the program for the 44th year, alongside Associate Head Coach Tom Billups, who enters his 28th season with the Bears.
California is coming off its fall sevens campaign, having completed a sweep of the West Coast Sevens circuit. The Bears' top side went unbeaten across the three tournaments, while several underclassmen made their collegiate debuts. Max Threlkeld, Nate Comiskey and Oliver Teague were each named tournament MVPs across the three events.
To close out the 2026 calendar year, Cal will host a fall preseason match against Western Washington University as it turns its focus to XVs competition. The two-time reigning national champion Golden Bears will host Western Washington at Witter Rugby Field on Nov. 7.
The Bears will open the 2027 season at Witter Rugby Field against UCLA on Jan. 30 during Cal's Parents Weekend. Cal will remain at home for its next three matches, hosting Grand Canyon University, the University of British Columbia and Arizona. The Bears and the Thunderbirds will continue their historic World Cup Series on Feb. 13. Last year, Cal defeated the T-birds 38-7 in Vancouver.
Cal will then travel to the East Coast for a highly anticipated matchup against the Midshipmen of Navy on Feb. 27. The Bears defeated Navy twice in 2026, 52-45 in the regular season and 36-22 National Collegiate Championship final.
The Bears return to Strawberry Canyon to host Army West Point on March 13 during Cal's annual Homecoming celebration. Cal bested Army 70-18 last season at West Point and posted a 24-19 victory in the Black Knights 2025 visit to Cal.
They will then host their final regular-season match at Witter Rugby Field on March 20 against nearby foes Saint Mary's College. In 2026, Cal won in Moraga during the regular season versus the Gaels, 66-35, and followed up that victory with a 59-19 win in the National semifinal.
Cal will close out the regular season on the road with a trip to Provo, Utah, to face Brigham Young on March 27. The teams last met in the D1A National Collegiate Championship quarterfinals last season, when the Bears defeated the Cougars 96-12.
The D1A postseason will take place throughout April, with the first round, quarterfinals and semifinals scheduled for consecutive weeks from April 3-17. Matches will be hosted at the home venue of the higher-seeded team. The D1A National Collegiate Championship title match is scheduled for May.
Kickoff for all home matches at Witter Rugby Field and the away contest at BYU is scheduled for 1 p.m. The kickoff time for the match against Navy will be announced at a later date. Visit the schedule page for updates and potential changes.
