California’s top side goes unbeaten Saturday in Palo Alto
PALO ALTO – The California rugby team's top side won its second West Coast 7s title of the fall Saturday, finishing the day undefeated at Stanford. Nate Comiskey was named Man of the Tournament after recording three tries and five conversions.
The Golden Bears opened the day with two shutout victories in pool play, defeating Saint Mary's second side 46-0 and Indiana 31-0. Cal continued its dominant run in the Championship Division semifinals, earning a 24-7 win over Cal Poly to advance to the final.
In a rematch of the Los Angeles tournament final, the Bears faced Saint Mary's top side for the title. Cal prevailed 31-12 to claim the Stanford sevens championship.
Senior Max Threlkeld led Cal's top side with five tries, while sophomore Julian Bishop added four tries and two conversions. Sophomore Elliott Lewis also contributed three tries and a conversion.
Cal's second side closed its tournament with a 15-12 victory over Saint Mary's second side after falling to Saint Mary's top side and Cal Poly in pool play.
Sophomore Gur Levy led Cal II with four tries, while sophomore Oliver Sinclair recorded a try and two conversions.
"To the credit of the team I think we got better from the first tournament, so it's good to win, but better to demonstrate some improvement," said head coach Jack Clark. "That said, we've got plenty to work on. One more week of 7's rugby, then we turn the page to fifteens."
Cal will look to sweep the West Coast 7s circuit next weekend when the Bears return to Southern California for WC7s SoCal on Oct. 17-18. The two-day tournament, which will be the final iteration of the event, will take place at the Oceanside Sports Complex in San Diego.
