11 Different Players Score In 103-5 Victory
BERKELEY - The California rugby team had five players score multiple tries as the Golden Bears opened the XVs season with a 103-5 victory over Western Washington at Witter Rugby Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Jude Sheppard led the team with a hat trick, while freshman Ryan Scully, sophomore Gur Levy and juniors Chris Biller and Broc Daily each registered two tries. Eleven players scored overall as Cal secured the decisive win.
Senior Talae Tuimaunei opened the scoring with a try just over one minute into the match before Biller notched his first try of the day four minutes later.
The Vikings answered four minutes later with what would be their lone score of the game. The Bears responded with eight unanswered tries, including another from Biller and two from Levy, to build a 58-5 halftime lead.
Sheppard recorded the opening try of the second half before adding two more to complete his hat trick. Cal scored tries within two minutes of each other on two separate occasions, with Scully adding the second try each time.
Sophomore John Warren made five of seven conversion attempts, while fellow sophomore Oliver Sinclair added three conversions.
"We appreciate the Western boys battling to the end," head coach Jack Clark said. "They are taking a big step up in competition, but they have the coaching and attitudes needed to make the transition. Our boys were excited to play, and put in a good effort."
