Two Teams To Represent Bears At Northern California Sevens Tournament
BERKELEY — California rugby returns to the pitch Saturday in Palo Alto as the Golden Bears send two squads to compete in the West Coast 7s tournament at Stanford. This will be the Bears' second sevens tournament this fall after both Cal teams went unbeaten in Los Angeles on Sept. 26. The Bears' top side took the Champion Division title, while the second side took home the Challenger Division title.
The full day of action at Steuber Rugby Stadium will begin at 9 a.m. PT, with the Cup final set for 4:20 p.m. Cal will once again send two squads, with Cal I serving as the program's top side and Cal II competing as its reserve side.
Last year at West Coast 7s at Stanford, the two squads had a perfect day, combining for eight wins and no losses, with the Bears' top side lifting the trophy at the end of the tournament for its second title of the 2025 fall campaign.
At this weekend's tournament, both teams will compete in the same Championship division. Cal I will compete in Pool A against Indiana and Saint Mary's second side, while Cal II will compete in Pool B against the top sides from Cal Poly and Saint Mary's.
Last time out, Cal's top side went undefeated, beating Grand Canyon (24-7) and Long Beach State (36-0) in pool play. The Bears defeated Indiana, 19-7, in the Champion semifinals before defeating Saint Mary's, 22-7, in the Cup final. Cal's second side also went unbeaten, cruising past San Diego (32-5) and Long Beach State II (22-0) in pool play. The Bears took down Mexico ANUIES, 36-5, in the Challenger semifinals before beating Saint Mary's second side, 27-5, in the championship match to claim the Challenger title.
Max Threlkeld led Cal I with four tries and was named tournament MVP in Los Angeles. James Curtis added three tries and two conversions, while Nate Comiskey registered two tries and two conversions. Freshman Ryan Scully and sophomore Oliver Sinclair both led Cal's second side with four tries, while freshman Reese Reiter and junior Tomás Tort each contributed three.
