The 15th-ranked California field hockey team suffered a 1-0 non-conference loss to No. 18 Boston University Sunday afternoon at MIT's Jack Barry Field. The Golden Bears drop to 8-6 (3-0 NorPac) as the Terriers improve to 9-6 (1-1 America East) for the year. The loss was the third straight for the Bears, completing the Massachusetts trip 0-3.
The Terriers got all the scoring they needed 15:16 into the first half, as sophomore midfielder Kara Rossi sprinted down the left side and fed a pass into the circle to Dalinda Banuelos, who was positioned to the left of Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp. Banuelos turned and shot, scoring her sixth goal of the season and giving B. U. a 1-0 lead.
Cal had its best first-half scoring chance midway through the half, but the Golden Bears couldn't convert on three straight penalty corners.
Early in the second half, with the Terriers on one of their 10 corner opportunities, junior forward Celeste Hubbard missed an attempt to double the B. U. advantage, as she hit the crossbar with a lifted shot.
With 17 minutes remaining in the game, Cal had its best scoring chance of the game deflect off the crossbar as well. Junior midfielder Nora Feddersen took a shot from directly in front of B. U. senior goalkeeper Susan Harrington. The ball was tipped and hit the cross bar but did not go into the cage.
"The biggest turning point to this game was that our press was outstanding," said Terrier head coach Sally Starr. "From the press we created a number of great scoring chances. I couldn't be happier with how we played today."
Knapp made five saves in the effort as Harrington finished the game with six saves and her fourth shutout of the season. The Bears were led offensively by Feddersen's six-shot effort, while the Terriers were paced by Banuelos' nine shots.
Cal next returns home for a conference game, hosting Saint Louis Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. at Maxwell Family Field.
