April 23, 2013

BERKELEY - Hammed Suleman, whose victory in the triple jump clinched the 119th Big Meet title for Cal last Saturday, has been named the Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Week.

In the penultimate event of the afternoon, Suleman recorded a distance of 51-3.75 to capture the triple jump and contribute five points to Cal's team total. The result gave the Bears 85 points when 82 were need for the victory, sealing the meet for Cal with the 4x400-meter relay still to go.

Earlier in the day, Suleman won the long jump with a wind-aided mark of 24-2.25. The Big Meet team result gave the Cal men their first triumph over Stanford since 2006 and improved their series edge to 67-50-2.

Suleman currently leads the Pac-12 and ranks second in the country in the triple jump with a best effort of 53-4.50 from the Texas Relays in late March.

Cal returns home this weekend for the Brutus Hamilton Open and Distance Carnival Friday and the Brutus Hamilton Invitational Challenge Saturday at Edwards Stadium. The two-day meet honors the Bears' longtime coach who guided Cal to 14 top-10 NCAA finishes and served as head coach of the U.S. team at the 1952 Olympics. Admission is free.
