Cal Improves To 5-0 At Home
BERKELEY – The No. 4 California men's water polo team doubled-up No. 16 Pepperdine 22-11 Saturday to improve to 5-0 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Golden Bears (12-4) lit up the stat sheet for the second time this week with 11 players finding the back of the net and five registering multi-goal efforts. Sophomores Beso Akhvlediani and Kai Inoue led the way with four goals and two assists each and freshmen Ilias Angelopoulos and Amir Shafrir both secured hat tricks.
It took less than five minutes for Akhvlediani to get his own hat trick as Cal opened on a 5-0 run and never looked back, winning the first quarter 7-2, which led to a 12-5 halftime deficit. The Bears came out the break firing to win the third period 7-2 before the Waves (8-12) took the final period 4-3.
Reigning MPSF Player of the Week Aran Pina had another standout performance with 11 saves, two steals, and three assists in just three quarters of play. The sophomore goalkeeper allowed just seven goals with a 61.1% save percentage before junior Riley Clansen took over in the fourth quarter.
The homestand continues next weekend when Cal hosts No. 1 UCLA on Saturday and No. 3 USC on Sunday. Both games are set for 1 p.m. on Overnght.
