Cal to Announce New Top 10 Opponent for '98 Football Schedule
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Apparently the Cal Athletic Department will announce a major new addition to next year's football schedule, as soon as next week. Associate Athletic Director Kevin Reneau said, "(Athletic Director) John Kasser is finalizing details with a perennial national power, one which is contending for the '97 national championship and we expect a resolution within a week. The good news is that we expect this team to come to Berkeley first as part of a two-game series. It should be a major, major addition to our home schedule for Bay Area fans." If the Kasser negotiations go well, Cal could announce the new schedule addition as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. The previously published Cal-San Jose Stat game scheduled on Oct. 3 has not been contractually consumated, so that date remains open as well as an open date on Sept. 19.
