BERKELEY -
This week's Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor could very easily be given to the entire California rugby team, which captured the 23rd national championship in school history with a 37-7 victory over BYU on Saturday afternoon. However, senior captain
Chase Brogan, who led the Golden Bears throughout the season, has been chosen as the winner of the award.
Brogan led by example all year long, shifting from center to flyhalf and adjusting his game accordingly to ensure the Bears stayed on track to win their fourth consecutive national title.
Against BYU in the championship, Brogan kept the Cougars honest with frequent clearance kicks and territorial boots, and in the 38th minute, he recovered his own pop kick that he had launched from outside the 22-meter line to score a try, building Cal's lead at 13-0 going into halftime.
"Coach [Jack] Clark always says that to the hustler will come the rewards," said Brogan. "I was hustling and I got lucky."
The captain was carried off the pitch by his teammates after the final whistle.
