BERKELEY -
For the second week in a row, the Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor goes to a swimmer and a national champion. Senior
Patrick O'Neil posted a career-best time in the 200 butterfly to win the title on Saturday in Minneapolis at the NCAA Championships. Last weekend, sophomore
Dana Vollmer from the women's swimming team captured an individual NCAA title as well as three relay championships.
O'Neil, competing for his final time as a member of the Golden Bear team, had an outstanding weekend. In the preliminary heats of the 200 fly, the senior posted a career-best time of 1:44.00. Then in the finals, he outdid himself, registering a time of 1:43.77 to win the championship. He is the first Golden Bear to win a 200 fly title since Ugur Taner won the individual honor in 1994, 1995 and 1996. O'Neil was also the Pac-10 Champion in the event this season.
As a team, the Golden Bears finished in eighth place with 176 points. O'Neil also added a sixth-place national finish in the 100 fly. Junior Dominik Meichtry finished second in the 200-meter freestyle event.
