Cal Completes Weekend Sweep With 3-2 Win Over Michigan State

Bears Improve to 5-0 on the Season After Win Over Spartans
The California field hockey team (5-0) continued its undefeated season Sunday, defeating Michigan State (3-4), 3-2, at Ralph Young Field. The Golden Bears overcame a one-goal deficit in the second half, scoring twice in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Liz Klompmaker scored the game-winning goal, while Agustina Daud and Josefina Moyano also found the back of the net.
The Bears and Spartans played to a scoreless draw through the first half, with Cal recording 12 shots and Michigan State managing just two. Cal continued to apply pressure early in the third quarter before Michigan State broke through with a goal from Bianca Pizano at the 8:06 mark.
Cal answered less than five minutes later when Daud regained the ball from a Spartan in the circle and lifted it over the keeper's head for a top-shelf goal with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter, tying the score at 1-1 heading into the fourth.
Moyano put the Bears ahead five minutes into the fourth quarter, finding the top-left corner of the cage with a reverse shot after a ball sent in from Pears in the corner. Michigan State quickly responded just 34 seconds later when Lilian Knorr tied the game at 2-2.
With nine minutes remaining, Cal earned a penalty corner, and Klompmaker found the back of the net off an assist from Moyano to put the Bears ahead for good and seal the game-winning goal. This also marked Klompmaker's 37th career goal, moving her into sole possession of fifth place in Cal's all-time record book after she entered the game tied with former Bear Ilse Akkermans.
The Bears' defense held Michigan State scoreless over the final 8:59 to secure the 3-2. Goalkeeper Carine Van Weichen made three saves in the contest, including one in each of the first three quarters.
Cal finished with 23 shots, including 12 on goal, while Michigan State recorded nine shots, with five on goal. The Bears also held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. Klompmaker led Cal with nine shots and three shots on goal, while Moyano recorded one goal and one assist.
The Bears return to California next weekend to take on No. 1 Northwestern at UC Davis on Sept. 19.
